A stamping colleague shared an article with me today that she had found online. WalletPop compiled an entertaining list of the top ten overpriced things to avoid if you’re looking to save money. That bottled water and hotel minibars made the list should surprise no one, and really, bottled wine isn’t much of a shocker, either. I admit, though, that I wasn’t expecting to see greeting cards at number 8 on the list.
That’s a good question. When I first joined Stampin’ Up! back in January 2003, I had absolutely no intention of becoming a cardmaker. I was looking for a way to improve my scrapbooking, learn some new techniques, and stop spending money on those pesky alphabet stickers! However, in those ten years, I can count on one hand the number of commercially-made greeting cards I’ve purchased. I love designing the right card for the recipient, and knowing that my card is often a gift in itself. Yes, it takes some time to make my own cards, but how long do you spend looking for the perfect card in the store before you settle on one? Add in the driving time back and forth (not to mention the gas money) and I think the time becomes a moot issue.
So we’re left with the original thought: the cards that are kept are those made by hand. So why would anyone pay a 200% markup for a greeting card that is going to end up in the garbage anyway?
If you haven’t tried your hand at cardmaking, I’d love to help you get started!
